CAD-Based Surgical Planning, Patient-Specific Guides, and Custom Implants: Evolution, Controversies, and Future Directions

Both CAD-based orthopedic and neurosurgical planning, and PSG design and 3D-printing have evolved beyond recognition since their first clinical application nearly a decade ago. This presentation explores the lessons learned during that journey, describes the current state of the art, and considers where these techniques may take us in the future. Along the way concerns and controversies surrounding the use of this technology are discussed, and the huge potential of patient-specific implants reviewed.

RACE Program #20-1119204 is approved for 1.25 hours of continuing education credits in jurisdictions which recognize the American Association of Veterinary State Boards’ (AAVSB) Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE). However, participants should be aware that some boards have limitations on the number of hours accepted in certain categories and/or restrictions on certain methods of delivery of continuing education. Bill graduated from Cambridge University vet school in 1997, and after a period in general practice, undertook an orthopedic Residency at Willows Referral Service between 2009 and 2011. Bill was RCVS board-certified in 2013 and remains an RCVS Orthopedic Surgery Specialist. Bill continued to work in referral orthopedic practice until 2019 when he moved to Vet3D full-time. Bill founded Vet3D in 2015 to exploit the potential of CAD-based surgical planning to create patient-specific surgical guide systems for orthopedic and neurosurgical applications. Vet3D has so far provided over 2000 guide systems for surgeons throughout the UK, Europe, USA, and the rest of the world.
