Lindsey Helms Boone, DVM, PhD, DACVS (Large Animal)

Assistant Professor of Equine Surgery

Auburn University

Dr. Boone received her DVM from the University of Georgia in 2008, completed an internship in large animal medicine and surgery at Texas A&M University in 2009, and then completed a large animal surgery residency at the University of Georgia in 2012. Dr. Boone served as a large animal clinical instructor in equine surgery at the University of Georgia from 2012–2013 while completing her PhD in physiology and pharmacology from the University of Georgia in 2013. From 2013–2016, she gained valuable experience as an associate surgeon in an equine sports medicine and surgery referral practice in Tryon, NC. She became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2015. In 2016, she joined the faculty at Auburn University as an assistant professor of equine surgery.

John Peroni, DVM, MS, DACVS (Large Animal)

University of Georgia

Dr. Peroni graduated from the College of Veterinary Medical Science at the University of Parma in Italy in 1994. During Veterinary School traveled to the U.S. and attended several institutions for prolonged periods of time including Delaware Equine Center, the University of Pennsylvania at New Bolton Center, Davis College of Veterinary Medicine and Chino Valley Equine Hospital. As a result of those experiences, he was encouraged to pursue an internship at Chino Valley Equine Hospital where he remained for 2 years from ’94 to ‘96. He subsequently moved to Michigan State University where he completed a surgical residency and a MS degree from 1996 to 2000. Following this training he became a faculty member at the University of Georgia in the Fall of 2000 and is currently a Professor of Surgery with clinical, didactic and research responsibilities. In the clinic Dr. Peroni focuses on lameness and orthopedic surgical case management but enjoys all aspects of surgery. In the classroom Dr Peroni teaches lameness – musculoskeletal biology and imaging and performs a large part of his didactic effort on the clinic floor with senior veterinary students. Dr. Peroni’s was named to the Dr. Steeve Giguère Memorial Professorship which will allow him to continue to focus his research on the field of Biological Therapies to include the use of cell based (stem cells) and blood derived (platelet rich plasma) products to repair musculoskeletal disorders. This research interest has also included a significant interest in developing large animal models to translate foundational science into clinical practice.

Lauren Schnabel, DVM, PhD, DACVS, DACVSMR (Moderator)

Associate Professor Equine Orthopedic Surgery

NC State University

Dr. Schnabel is an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at NC State University and has over 20 years of equine clinical experience and over 15 years of both equine and human research experience in the fields of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine. Her main interests are in the prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and advancing equine rehabilitation. She has published over 60 peer-reviewed publications, given invited presentations nationally and internationally for both her clinical and research expertise, and has received both external and internal funding for her research work. In 2019, Dr. Schnabel was appointed an Associate Director of the Comparative Medicine Institute at NC State University and was also named as an NC State University Faculty Scholar for her success in clinical work, research, teaching, mentorship, and community outreach efforts. In 2020, she was awarded the Zoetis Award for Veterinary Research Excellence. Dr. Schnabel has served on both the Morris Animal Foundation Large Animal Scientific Advisory Board and the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, Inc. Research Advisory Committee. She is also an Associate Editor for the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Medicine (Regenerative Medicine Section) and is on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Orthopedic Research.
